DAF Trucks is gearing up for the production of its new range of fully electric trucks. Several of these vehicles are already in operation with key transport companies in the Netherlands, receiving positive feedback.
DAF has long been a leader in the shift towards electric transport. As the first European truck manufacturer to launch a fully electric truck, the company continues to expand its role in the energy transition. The number of electric trucks in its range has grown steadily, with particular emphasis on zero-emission models.
DAF is also supporting customers by offering charging solutions through its dealerships and providing specialised training for drivers of electric trucks. In 2023, DAF opened a new assembly plant in Eindhoven to focus specifically on the production of electric trucks.
Award-Winning Electric Models
The new generation of DAF electric trucks is based on the XD and XF models, both of which have been recognised as ‘International Truck of the Year’. These trucks are designed to meet high standards of efficiency, safety, and comfort. They feature electric motors capable of delivering up to 350 kW (480 hp) and offer a range of battery options, from two to five battery packs, allowing for a maximum range of up to 500 kilometres on a single charge.
These trucks are powered by Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are known for their high energy density. LFP batteries offer advantages in terms of safety, lifespan, and the number of charging cycles, making them particularly well-suited for the demands of commercial trucking.
On-Road Testing and Operator Feedback
DAF has been working with leading transport operators to test its new electric models in real-world conditions. So far, feedback from operators has been highly positive.
At Oegema Transport in Dedemsvaart, the XD Electric truck is delivering nearly 500 kilometres on a full charge. According to Gerlof Oegema, an additional charge could push that distance to 1,000 kilometres per day, making long-distance routes more feasible.
E. van Wijk Logistics in Giessen is also testing the XF Electric. CEO Ewout van Wijk reported that while infrastructure challenges remain, the truck is performing well. He highlighted the truck’s smooth handling, quiet cabin, and immediate torque as standout features.
Cornelissen Transport in Nijmegen has integrated both the XD and XF Electric trucks into its fleet, using them primarily for supermarket deliveries. According to Peter Leegstraten, Manager of Purchasing & Innovation, the trucks align well with the company’s goal of zero-emission transport. He also noted that the vehicle design, including features like a large windscreen and side cameras, makes the trucks ideal for urban operations, ensuring clear visibility and safety in city driving.
The Future of Electric Transport
DAF’s expansion into electric trucks comes at a time of increasing demand for zero-emission vehicles. By offering a comprehensive support package, including charging infrastructure and driver training, DAF is helping transport operators transition to electric fleets more smoothly.
The new assembly plant in Eindhoven and the continued development of DAF’s electric truck range show the company’s commitment to meeting future transport needs. With positive feedback from early adopters and growing demand for sustainable transport, DAF is well-positioned to lead the shift towards zero-emission logistics.
Conclusion
DAF’s fully electric trucks, based on the award-winning XD and XF models, are setting new standards in the commercial transport industry. By supporting customers with infrastructure solutions and ensuring high performance on the road, DAF is helping to make the transition to electric transport both practical and efficient. As the market for zero-emission vehicles grows, DAF’s new generation of electric trucks will play a key role in shaping the future of transport.
